Microsoft SQL Management Studio Express 2008 Install Guide
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) provides a graphical management tool for SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2005.
The only method of installing SSMSE 2008 is by downloading the full SQL 2008 Express Setup. We have provided a guide to only installing the management studio feature rather than installing all features.
System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems (either 32bit or 64bit)
- Windows XP with SP3, SP2 or SP1
- Windows Vista with SP1 or RTM
- Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2
- Windows Server 2008
Prerequisites
All previous versions of Management Studio Express must be removed before installing Management Studio Express 2008. The new version can manage both Microsoft SQL 2005 and 2008 instances.
The following software is required to be able to install Management Studio Express 2008.
Install Management Studio Express 2008
Once you have installed the required software you can proceed with downloading and installing Management Studio Express
1. Download
Download the appropriate version of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools from the links below.
2. Run Setup
Run the setup file you downloaded in Step 1.
If you haven't installed all the prerequisites you will be given details on what is missing. Once you have installed the required updates launch the setup file again.
To proceed with the setup Please Click the Tab labelled 'Installation'. Then Click 'New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation'
3. Setup Support Rules
The installation wizard will check to make sure your PC meets the minimum requirements; if any problems are found you will see a red cross next to the check that has failed. Once you have corrected any problems you will be able to Click OK and proceed to the next step.
4. Product Key
All you need to do in this step is Click Next, the product key isn't required for the express edition of Microsoft SQL 2008.
5. License Terms
Accept the Microsoft Software License Agreement by checking I accept the license terms and then Click Next.
6. Setup Support Files
The installation requires setup support files to be installed before you can continue. Simply Click Install to proceed.
7. Setup Support Rules
Setup Support Rules checks to see if there will be any problems installing SQL 2008 Express Edition. Any failures must be corrected before continuing. If all checks pass please Click Next to proceed.
8. Feature Selection
The only feature you need for Management Studio Express is Management Tools - Basic, only select this feature and Click Next.
9. Disk Space Requirements
The setup wizard will check to make sure you have enough disk space free before continuing. If there are no issues please Click Next.
10. Error & Usage Reporting
It is your choice if you want to send data back to Microsoft, there is no requirement to do so. Once you have made your choice Click Next.
11. Installation Rules
The setup wizard will now check to make sure the installation will not be blocked. If there are any failures you will need to correct them before continuing. If there are no issues please Click Next.
12. Ready to Install
You have finally reached the stage where Management Studio Express will be installed, to proceed Click Install.
13. Installation Progress
The install process should take between 5-8mins depending on your PC configuration. Enough time to make a cup of coffee!
14. Installation Process Complete
You will now be informed the components you selected have been installed successfully or unsuccessfully. If the install was a success please Click Next, if the install failed review any error details and follow any links provided.
15. Complete
The installation has now been completed and you can Click Close to exit the installation wizard.
